Identity

When you become a Christian, you are born again by the Spirit of God and given a new identity. The old nature and identity are gone, and you receive a brand-new life in Christ.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

To walk in this new identity, you must believe God’s Word fully, because your new nature is born out of the Word of God. Your identity is revealed through His Word.

“You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” — 1 Peter 1:23

When you believe the Word of God, you begin to live out the reality of this new life.

The Name of God

Question:

What is the significance of names?

Throughout the Old Testament, God revealed His nature through His many names. For example:

Elohim – The One and Only God

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1

El Elyon – God Most High

“I will give thanks to the Lord because He does what is right. I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.” — Psalm 7:17

El Shaddai – God Almighty

“Whoever rests in the shadow of the Most High God will be kept safe by the Mighty One.” — Psalm 91:1

The Name Above All Names

In the New Testament, God revealed Himself through His ultimate name.

“I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name

For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.” — Psalm 138:2

The Word of God is Jesus (John 1:1). God has exalted His Word—Jesus—above every other name. When God gives us a new identity in Christ, He also gives us authority to use His name to triumph in every circumstance of life.

Paul writes of Jesus:

“He appeared as a man. He was humble and obeyed God completely, even to the point of death on a cross. Therefore, God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow—in heaven, on earth, and under the earth—and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” — Philippians 2:8–11

And Peter declared:

“Then listen to this, you and all the people of Israel! You nailed Jesus Christ of Nazareth to the cross. But God raised Him from the dead. It is through Jesus’ name that this man stands healed in front of you… Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” — Acts 4:10, 12

Through the name of Jesus, salvation is given—salvation from sin, death, fear, Satan, and defeat. In Christ, you have been given His name to walk in victory and to be a blessing to the world.

Jesus Himself said:

“Go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

— Mark 16:15–18
