◦ 1 John 5:1-12. 

◦ 1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children as well. 2Here is how we know that we love God’s children. We know it when we love God and obey his commands. 3In fact, here is what it means to love God. We love him by obeying his commands. And his commands are not hard to obey. 4That’s because everyone who is a child of God has won the battle over the world. Our faith has won the battle for us. 5Who is it that has won the battle over the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

◦ 6Jesus Christ was born as we are, and he died on the cross. He wasn’t just born as we are. He also died on the cross. The Holy Spirit is a truthful witness about him. That’s because the Spirit is the truth. 7There are three that are witnesses about Jesus. 8They are the Holy Spirit, the birth of Jesus, and the death of Jesus. And the three of them agree. 9We accept what people say when they are witnesses. But it’s more important when God is a witness. That’s because it is what God says about his Son. 10Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts what God says about him. Whoever does not believe God is calling him a liar. That’s because they have not believed what God said about his Son. 11Here is what God says about the Son. God has given us eternal life. And this life is found in his Son. 12Whoever belongs to the Son has life. Whoever doesn’t belong to the Son of God doesn’t have life.


Three lessons from the passage;

◦ 1. Love is obeying the Law of God.

◦ 2. We have overcome the world

◦ 3. We have eternal life. 


1. Love is obeying the Law of God.

◦ 1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children as well. 2Here is how we know that we love God’s children. We know it when we love God and obey his commands. 3In fact, here is what it means to love God. We love him by obeying his commands. And his commands are not hard to obey.


Note: Believing in Jesus produces a miraculous birth! 

God is Love not has Love. The life of God is Love. 

As a child of God, you have the life of God in you. If that life is in you, you will love those who also have that life. 

1 John 2: 14 If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers,[d] it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. 


God’s command is not hard to obey because, from Romans 5:5, that law which is God’s love has been put in our hearts by God when we are saved.

◦ How can a Christian grow in Love?


4That’s because everyone who is a child of God has won the battle over the world. Our faith has won the battle for us. 5Who is it that has won the battle over the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

◦ Note: difference between the earth and the world.

◦ 1. we have overcome the world. John defined the world as; 


◦ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.1 John 2:16

◦ The world is sum up as; Immorality, materialism, humanism 

◦ 2. Satan is the God of this world. 

◦ In Daniel- Prince that governed nations. 

◦ Dan 10: 20 He replied, “Do you know why I have come? Soon I must return to fight against the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia, and after that the spirit prince of the kingdom of Greece[g] will come.

◦ Satan and his fallen angels spiritually operates in this world but we have overcome them. 

◦ Family spirits – India, Benin, Manchester

3. we have eternal life. 


◦ 11Here is what God says about the Son. God has given us eternal life. And this life is found in his Son. 12Whoever belongs to the Son has life. Whoever doesn’t belong to the Son of God doesn’t have life.

◦ There is a lot of effort to find the secrete of life to no avail! 

◦ Life will win over death. 

◦ Having Life gives meaning to living. 

◦ The bible talks of – death and the second death. 

◦ - life and eternal life. 

◦ We have eternal life. 

Conclusion


◦ Love is the Law of God. This love life overcomes sin, the world and death. 

◦ We have this eternal life of God. 

◦ We can walk in this victory!
