Two sections:

1. Preparation for ministry: Jesus’ temptation (verses 1-11)

2. Jesus begins his ministry (verses 12-17)

Why would the Spirit lead Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted?

1. To prepare him for his ministry to us: there’s nothing you can go through that Jesus did not go through

2. He was fasting and praying, seeking his Father

3. There was a very real spiritual war

4. To show us how we can overcome temptation: we can use Scripture like the Lord Jesus did to combat the enemy

The three different temptations

1. Food (verses 1-4)

2. Disobedience (verses 5-7) – When God says don’t do something and you do it that is tempting the Lord

3. Power (verses 7-10)

Discuss:

1. In what ways are you exposed to similar temptations to Jesus?

2. How can you overcome these temptations?

3 important responses from Jesus

1. “‘Man shall not live by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (verse 4)

2. ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (verse 7)

3. “‘You shall worship the Lord your God

and him only shall you serve.’” (verse 10)

Further helpful Scriptures on overcoming temptation

Hebrews 2:14-18

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 4:14-16

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Conclusion

1. God is with us even as we face temptation in the wilderness

2. Victory comes from trusting in God’s Word

3. Will you resist the devil or yield yourself to satan?
