17:1-5     Jesus prays for himself

17:6-19   Jesus prays for his disciples

17:20-26 Jesus prays for all believers

John 17:20-26 (NIRV)

20 “I do not pray only for them. I pray also for everyone who will believe in me because of their message.

21 Father, I pray they will be one, just as you are in me and I am in you. I want them also to be in us. Then the world will believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory you gave me. I did this so they would be one, just as we are one. 23 I will be in them, just as you are in me. This is so that they may be brought together perfectly as one. Then the world will know that you sent me. It will also show the world that you have loved those you gave me, just as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am. I want them to see my glory, the glory you have given me. You gave it to me because you loved me before the world was created.

25 “Father, you are holy. The world does not know you, but I know you. Those you have given me know you have sent me. 26 I have shown you to them. And I will continue to show you to them. Then the love you have for me will be in them. I myself will be in them.”

1 Jesus prayed for all Christians:

Oneness with each other and God,

    Seeing Jesus’ glory

    Knowing God

How can Christians and God be one?

It is by:

  1. having the same glory as Jesus’ (v. 22) (shaing in same suffering) and

  2. having Jesus in them and (v. 23a) (sharing the same Spirit)

  3. having the same love from God (v. 23b) (sharing the same loving relationship).

How can they see Jesus’ glory?

It is by: being with Jesus

How can they know God?

It is by knowing Jesus as the one from God and by Jesus’ showing God to them.

Discussion 1:

Are you sure about Jesus? Do you believe Jesus as the one sent from God and He was God became flesh?

2. Jesus prayed in Love:

He is loved by the Father, and he prayed for those loved by God.

God’s Love for Jesus is mentioned in all 3 prayers as the foundation of the prayers. Jesus’ prayer is to share the knowledge of God and his Love to all believers. “Then the love you have for me will be in them. I myself will be in them.” (v. 26)

Discussion 2:

Have you experience God’s love? Do you want to know God and be loved by God? How can it be done?

After this prayer for believers, Jesus was arrested and entered his glory on the cross.
