1. Have
you been asked to perform a duty you really don’t want to do?
Mark
14:32-36 (ERV Easy-to-Read Version)
32 Jesus and his followers went to a place
named Gethsemane. He said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 But he told his disciples to come with him. He began to be very distressed and
troubled, 34 and he said to them, “My heart is so heavy with grief, I feel as
if I am dying. Wait here and stay awake.”
35 Jesus went on a little farther away from
them, fell to the ground, and prayed. He asked that, if possible, he would not
have this time of suffering. 36 He said, “ Abba, Father! You can do all things.
Don’t make me drink from this cup. But do what you want, not what I want.”
Discussion:
2. Why
was Jesus “very distressed and troubled” and his heart “so heavy with grief I
feel as if I am dying”? What do you think was Jesus’ struggle at that time?
3. Do
you think Jesus has a choice of his own path and action? What options did he
have?
4. If
the Father “can do all things”, why then did He not spare Jesus of his
suffering?
5. WHEN
do you think Jesus has decided to drink the cup?
6. Did
the Father answer or not answer Jesus’ prayer?
Reflection
and Application:
7. Jesus
and the Father have paid their utmost price in order to save you; what is your
response to God?
8. “Do
what you want, not what I want.” Can you share a time when you prayed that
prayer? Is this your prayer to the Father today?
